Welcome to the Bangor Museum

Founded in 1864, the Bangor Historical Society has been collecting, preserving, and interpreting the history of the Penobscot Valley for over 140 years.

Now under renovation, this landmark building at 25 Broad Street, in downtown Bangor, is the future home of the Bangor Museum and History Center. When competed, this modern climate controlled facility will provide space for exhibitions, public programming, collections care and research. >Renovations in progress

Broad Street Construction Uncovers Artifact
As the Bangor Museum and History Center prepares a new facility to connect the Queen City’s diverse history with its residents, they are also uncovering items from Bangor’s past. Workers from Nickerson & O’Day Construction discovered a tattered journal ledger nestled between the wall boards.

“It appears to be an index of customers from 1846 for the Martin Prescott Company,” according to museum curator, Dana Lippitt. “We’ve identified many of the customer names as those of Bangor residents we are familiar with--including Henry Call whose portrait hangs in the Thomas A. Hill House.”
