Architectural Tour: Thomas Hill Standpipe

The photo here shows the Thomas Hill Standpipe, off Ohio Street, 1897. Designed by Ashley B. Tower, Holyoke, Mass. This standpipe is unique in the nation as a water tower-observatory in the shingle style. It commands a sweeping view of the city and the hills beyond. When lit at night, it is known as "the diamonds in the crown of the Queen City." It is open to the public four times per year.
