By 1850, Bangor had become a leading center of trade and culture, a shipbuilding mecca and undisputed capital of the timber industry. Residents lived in one of the richest cities in the world and built homes that reflected their wealth and influence. Today, our streets are lined with homes in the Gothic Revival, Greek Revival, and Italianate styles of that time period.

The Joseph C. White House located at 19 West Broadway. Built in 1866-1868, it is attributed to Calvin Ryder, Boston, MA. Designed in the fashionable Mansard style, this house was one of several mansions built after the Civil War on West Broadway and was erected for the fabulous sum of $15,000. The unusually large lot size displayed the taste for bucolic and picturesque effects in suburban landscaping.
